You will be given the symbols to enhance your Reiki and send long distance healing. After the activation attunement, we will practice drawing the symbols and sending Reiki to others.

Evenstar Books is located at 2401 University Avenue West in St. Paul, Minnesota. The telephone number is 651-644-3727. Class size is limited to 6, so please call to preregister.

What is Reiki?

Reiki (Pronounced “RAY-key”) is a Japanese word that means “spirit energy.” Reiki refers to therapeutic touch that helps the body’s natural energy flow properly. Proper energy flow through the body helps relieve stress, strengthen the immune system, and promote a general feeling of well-being.

Reiki is noninvasive and enhances your own energy fields. Your body determines how much energy you receive and where it is needed. Reiki can be used with traditional medical procedures and religious beliefs without conflict.

Benefits of Reiki

Reiki works well with regular medical treatment. It works in harmony with many forms of healing, including medications, psychological care, surgery, and any method of alternative care. Reiki works well with various healing methods in the following ways:

Relieves physical and emotional stress.
Helps eliminate the negative effeccts of energy imbalance
Helps minimize one’s sense of helplessness when facing disease and stress related to life changes.
Can help decrease the overall cost of medical care
Strengthens the immune system and promotes healing

Please note: Reiki does not replace the care provided by health care professionals. You are strongly encouraged to continue seeing your health care providers and following their recommendations in conjunction with Reiki treatments.

What to Expect at a Reiki Session

Before the Reiki session starts, you will be asked to make yourself comfortable. During the session, you will either sit in a chair or lie down. You can cover your eyes with a dark closth to help you relax and focus on your body.

I usually lay my hands in three or four positions on the head, front, and back. While I am doing the treatment, you may sense vibrations or feel my hands grow warmer or cooler.

Reiki feels different to everyone. Many people feel deeply relaxed after a session. Some clients see colors, and others experience temperature changes. During a Reiki session, the body takes in additional energy and uses the energy to help itself find balance.

After a Reiki Session

Following Reiki, you may experience mild discomfort for a few days as the body uses and processes the Reiki energy. Typically, I recommend my clients do the following after a Reiki session:

Increase your liquid intake, especially water.
Increase the amount of raw vegetables and fruit in your diet.
Decrease the amount of red meat in your diet for a few days (white meat or fish is okay).
Eat smaller food portions for a few days after treatment.

Research

Research has identified the positive effect Reiki can have on one’s well-being. A few studies are discussed below.

Pain Management
The purpose of the study was to explore the usefulness of Reiki as an adjunct to opoid therapy [drugs derived from opium] in management of pain. A pilot study was completed involving 20 volunteers who experienced pain for a variety of reasons, including cancer. All Reiki treatments were provided by a second degree Reiki therapist. Pain was measured using a visual analogue scale and Likert scale immediately before and after Reiki treatment. Both instruments showed a highly significant (p<0.0001) reduction in pain following Reiki treatment. (Using Reiki to Manage Pain: A Preliminary Report by Karin Olson, RN, PhD and John Hanson, MSc)

Anxiety Level
[Reiki] has been validated by experiments carried out at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in New York. The experiment was carried out by Janet Quinn, assistant director of nursing at the University of South Carolina. The design of this experiment tends to rule out the placebo effect. Thirty heart patients were given a 20 question psychological test to determine their level of anxiety. Then they were treated by a group trained in laying-on hands healing. A control group of patients were also treated by sham healers who imitated the same positions as those who had training. Anxiety levels dropped 17% after only five minutes treatment by trained practitioners, but those who were only imitating a treatment created no effect. (From an article published by the International Center for Reiki Training)

copyright 2005 Maggie Sterba, Reiki Master

Who is M.J. Reiki?

M.J. Reiki is group Reiki practice made up of Reiki Masters Maggie Sterba and Jaimie Zaugg and their students. Maggie has been practicing Reiki for fourteen years and teaching since 2000. Jaimie began practicing Reiki as one of Maggie's students and has been practicing and teaching with her since 2004.

Located in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, M.J.
Golf

Well, today is golf tournament day at work. Every year we divide up into teams and create a nine-hole mini golf course through the office, with each team designing and building one hole (with no money from the agency). Then we all play the course for prizes (best team score, best individual score, worst individual score and best hole design).

Last year, my team had the Debra Fish Resource Library, so I made a giant fish to put through. This year we got one of the classrooms, so no inspiration from the name of the room. Fortunately(!?) there was a poster on the wall of the cover of one of the books we publish. It was Good Going!, a book on toilet training. Did I mention that we publish early childhood educational materials? Well, we do.

We took inspiration from the book cover and made the hole all about potty training. The cup is a potty chair that lights up and sings. Before that, though, you have to get past the diapers. You have to putt up a ramp and through one of three tubes. One of the tubes drops you in the clear with a straight shot to the finish. Another drops you in a diaper stained with yellow food coloring (you see where this is leading, don't you?). The final tube drops your ball into...you gessed it, a diaper filled with what looks very much like baby poop. It's actually a melted mixture of Milk Duds, Snickers and Payday.

I'm so twisted sometimes. They should give a prize for grossest hole. I'd win for sure.

Later. Namaste.

3stitches.

My taxes are done!

I filed my taxes today. I checked and my W-2 was posted to our payroll sysem today, so I went ahead and filed. Actually, Minnesota isn't available for e-filing yet, so I just filed the federal return. Now I'm just waiting for my refund. In my opinion, there's no reason, in this age of electronic filing, that the infernal residue service shouldn't be able to accept returns instantly and deposit refunds within a matter of minutes. Tick, tick, tick...is it there yet? (Actually, I'm waiting for my refund anticipation loan to be deposited. I hate paying $48 for the privilege of not waiting a week or more, but hey, what can you do?)

Later. Namaste.

3stitches.

Cadillac Punk? I don't think so.

It has been way too long since I've done a substantial posting, so here's one, I think.

First off, here's the link to my First Footing pix: http://pics.livejournal.com/3stitches/gallery/0001ff53.

Second, middle age is not the time to spend eight hours on the basketball court without a break. Last weekend, I had eight games on Saturday and four on Sunday. Afterward, I said I wouldn't do it again (haven't done more than six in a row for a couple of years). When I got the call on Thursday, I was asked if I would do eight on Saturday again, and I said, "sure." I know, stupid, but I have my reasons. So, in an hour I head back to Coon Rapids Middle School for another four games.

Third, what have I been up to for the last several weeks? Hmm, let me see. Well, there was Christmas with my family. Chrismas eve dinner is always at my parents', and it's always soups, salads and cookies. Oyster stew is always there, and it's something I look forward to. This year we also had matzo ball soup and seafood bisque, all homemade. Yum!

Christmas day I went to my brother's around 3:00 because I don't do the Christmas present thing. I've always hated that part of the holiday (it has ruined Christmas for me since I was a kid), so a couple of years ago I finally told the family that I didn't want to be included anymore. Now I wait to make sure they're done with the present orgy before I show up.

My brother has finished and furnished his carriage house. For those unfamiliar with the term, that's a second house, next door to his house, that is two floors of garage with a big two bedroom apartment on the third floor. He built it because the three car garage on the street side of his house and the one car garage on the lake side weren't enough anymore to house his cars and boats. The carriage house is a great space for a party, and my SIL's office is going into the apartment.

It's also a great place for guests to stay. My other brother and his family stayed there over the holidays. Keeps guests from getting underfoot. There's also a couple of bar/arcade games for when all the other toys lose their fun. Did I mention that my bro likes his toys?

Anyway, here are the pics if you're interested: http://pics.livejournal.com/3stitches/gallery/0001g2wr, and here's the preview:

Trust me, Maggie's a cutie.

Since Christmas, I've been working and anticipating my boss's return from maternity leave. Her boss has been micromanaging me, and it's driving me nuts. We did clear the air the other day, though. I let her know how I feel and she told me that she doesn't actually want me to detail everything I'm doing every time someone calls her. She just wants to know I'm on it. Fine. We'll see.

First footing was loads of fun, though I didn't go. Sophie McHaggis went in my stead. I spent New Year's Eve cooking and sewing. I made a skirt for Sophie and my bruschetta pomodoro for First Footing. I cooked until nearly midnight.

The first payday of the new year sucked. My new insurance premiums took effect, but naturally my raise didn't. I figured out that with my new insurance premiums and my raise, I'll end up taking home a bit over $5 less this year than last. That doesn't count the increased copayments. Bastards.

Basketball started last weekend. I mentioned above that I've done 24 games in two weekends. (Oh, I neglected to mention that I had to take off right after the sentence about my boss's maternity leave. I looked up and realized that I had fifteen minutes to get to my first game, and it's a 20 minute drive. Oh, well.) Fun stuff. Now I'm exhausted and about ready for a nap.

Last night I went to a New Year's party. I made black beans and rice after I got home from basketball. Unfortunately they weren't a big hit. Still, I had a great time. It was good to see that bunch of folks. I may even have convinced another family to come to the EarthHouse MidSummer Gather. A very musical family at that! Catgut may have a fifteen-year-old banjo player to fiddle around with. (Yeah, I'm evil.)

I'm glad I have tomorrow off. I want to spend it lying around.

Anyway, that's me caught up.

Later. Namaste.

3stitches.

WiCoM Yule Cancelled!

For anyone who was planning to attend and hasn't already heard, the Wiccan Church of Minnesota's Yule ritual tonight has been cancelled due to inclement weather. Snow. In Minnesota. Whoda thunk?

(Actually, it's snow after a morning of freezing rain - no way the road crews will have all the roads totally safe by 6:00. Better safe than sorry. But still, it is funny.)

I'll still be keeping vigil tonight.

Later. Namaste. Blessed Yule!

3stitches.

Long week

It's been a bit since I've updated. Wow. What have I been up to? A lot, but not much that's postworthy, unfortunately. I did spend $480 on one pair of glasses yesterday. That "b" word my optometrist has been threatening me with for at least four years finally caught up with me. I had forgotten how expensive bifocals are. Last time I wore them (about 20 years ago) they were about the same cost as my current single vision ones (which was expensive for back then). I had the no-line lenses then. The lenses I'm getting now are progressive. Should be interesting.

It's not disturbing now, exactly, but it was at the time.

I was married, and my son Tommy was actually my son rather than my stepson. He was about four or so in the dream. My stepdaughter was not in the dream, and my wife (ex) looked like she did when we got divorced (in other words, a hundred pounds thinner than she was at any point during our marriage). We lived on the top floor of an apartment building somewhere in Minneapolis near Uptown. She and I were on the verge of splitting up so she could be with her boyfriend when the building started falling apart. We discovered this when Tommy fell through the floor. I managed to rescue him unharmed, but the house started falling apart around us while remaining, miraculously, still mostly standing. Just very dangerous.

We lost most of what we had to water damage when the pipies burst or to falling through the floor, and the ex took anything worth saving. I stayed in the building that night and drank a lot with the neighbors who also stayed, and who happened to be beautiful young (20s) women. I fell through various holes in the floor a couple of times and lost my phone.

Somehow the phone ended up being stolen by a restaurant employee, and I got it back so I could alert friends and family to what had befallen me. The dream ended shortly thereafter with me wandering down Lyndale Avenue feeling alone and empty, missing my son.

It's been a long week. I wanna go home now.

Two more hours.

Later. Namaste.

3stitches.

So-called "benefits"

We had our open enrollment meeting today to discuss "minor" changes to our insurance plans. Minor, yeah. Employee premiums for single coverage (for the wider network plan) increased by 74%. I'll be paying $50.95 more per month while my employer pays $1.59 less. The total premium increased by $49.36 a month, but my employer decided it was time to standardize their contribution percentage to 75%. How nice for them. Employee premiums increased by $14.32 for single +1 and $21.09 for full family coverage.

Also, copayments increased by $10 (how many insured people on my Flist pay a $35 copayment for an office visit?), and ER visits went from $55 (rediculous already) to 80% coverage after deductible (which increased from $500 to $750).

I'd need a raise of 29 cents an hour just to cover the increase in my medical premium, not to mention dental and life insurance. That ain't gonna happen. It is so time to find another job.

I really need a couple tequila shots.

Later. Namaste.

3stitches.
